A Better Resolution

Psalm 147:10-11 says, "His pleasure is not in the strength of the horse, nor his delight in the legs of man; the Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love."

So many of us make New Year's resolutions. A lot of the time these involve getting fit, exercising more and being healthy. Those are good resolutions; they're vital for a long, healthy life. But there is a kind of health that is much more important: our spiritual health. God does not take delight in our physical strength, he looks at our hearts. "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. (1 Sam. 16:7)

The best kind of resolution we can make is to grow stronger spiritually. To do things that will increase our spiritual strength. Things like maintaining a consistent prayer and devotional life will cause my character to become stronger. They will strengthen my heart. That's what God is concerned about this new year.

As many of us make resolutions this week let's focus on the ones that really matter, doing the things that bring us closer to God. When we succeed in that area every other area of our lives will benefit as well. How do I know this? I've experienced it. When I purpose to spend time with God on a regular basis I find that I'm in a place of greater peace. My temper seems to be much longer and my patience much greater. My family will testify that I'm an easier person to be around when I've had time to spend with God. The resolution to spend more time with God is a is a resolution that everyone will benefit from.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23
