My Life as Verb

I had a moment yesterday. One that reminded me of Lois, the mom from Malcolm in the Middle. She's the one screaming in the picture there, and that's pretty normal for her character. If you have ever watched the show you'll know that, while she loves her family totally, she's prone to moments of rage and anger and fits of loud yelling. We amuse ourselves with old episodes from time to time and are always so grateful that, although we have rough days, at least we're not that bad.

That is, until an image of Lois yelling at her kids flashed through my mind. Here's how it went down: I had just stepped out of the shower when child number two came to me, covered in cranberry juice.

Not good. She had spilled.

It was getting worse. She had spilled all of the playroom floor and couch.

Worse still, I had already told her twice to leave the juice downstairs in the kitchen.

To say I lost it might be an understatement. Suffice to say, I really, really overreacted. And I lost my cool. Later I apologized and now we're all good. But my actions that morning over the juice caused me to think of how my actions are perceived and what others think of them. You see, as a Christ follower, my life should be a verb. The things I do should speak just as loud, or even louder than the things I say.
Dictionary.Com defines a verb as a word that represents an action or a state of being. Go, strike, travel, and exist are examples of verbs.

First John 3:18 says
"Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth."

What do my actions say? Are they loving and kind? Or are they harsh and mean? If my life is to be lived out in action then I want the actions to be loving, I want the verbs I live out to be ones that showcase love, not anger.

Today I'm praying for my actions to marked by Christ's love; I'm paying attention to the things I do so that I can be sure that everything I do builds others up, as
Ephesians 4:29 reminds me to.
