"I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord give yourselves no rest."

Isaiah 62:6

This verse jumped out at me the other day in my regular reading. It was one of those moments where I really felt like God was thumping on my head, trying really hard to get my attention. I decided I better listen, and listen hard. I read the verse again,"Give yourselves no rest." I read it again, "Give yourselves no rest." And then one more time, just to make sure, "Give yourselves no rest."

Yep, that's what it said. My glasses were still working, there was nothing blocking my vision. It says, "Give yourselves no rest." What does that mean? I thought that God wanted us to rest, find solace and peace in him. In fact, I even posted about that
here. As I read some more and did a little looking at my Bible's handy references I found some similar passages, ones where the same words in the original language show up. There was the one of the persistent widow and the Canaanite women who asked Jesus to heal her daughter. Both of these situations show us two women who desperately wanted something, but neither of them give us any indication that they were distressed in spirit. They didn't seem overly worried, they even seemed at peace.

That made me think that this verse in Isaiah is talking not about a lack of physical rest, but of a spiritual persistence or tenacity. I know that I can find rest and solace in Jesus, in him there is a place of spiritual peace. But sometimes I must press in and dig deeper, seek him out more and persevere as I try to learn more about God. Work to uncover his truth, strive to gain understanding when I don't understand what the Bible says, pray longer-even when my spirit feels weary or God seems to be silent.

Let's face it, we all have different seasons to walk through. God wants to reveal himself to you, no matter what kind of season you are in, whether it's one of resting or persevering. Regardless of our season in life God longs to reveal himself.

"And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it." Isaiah 40:5

"He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness..." Daniel 2:22

"He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man...." Amos 4:13
Sometimes in the process of seeking him we need to push harder, strain and strive to hear his voice more clearly. But he will show himself, I'm encouraged and motivated today to keep seeking and not grow weary as I wait on him.

"Not that I have already obtained all this or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ took hold of me...One thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:12-15
